Service
The Specialist Education Itinerant Teacher (SEIT) service provides the opportunities to more effectively co-ordinate and utilise special education resourcing within a local network of learning support.
The programme brings together specialist expertise and resources available from Ferndale School and the Ministry of Education-Special Education.
It enhances excellence in educational provision for students with special educational needs in regular and specialist school settings.
Background
The Special Education Itinerant Teacher (SEIT) service is provided to schools that have an enrolled ORRS funded student and agree to transfer the additional ORRS teacher staffing component, 1 or 2, received for the student to Ferndale School who will provide the SEIT service.
Ferndale School has agreed to employ the SEIT on behalf of the enrolling school. The Ministry of Education Group Special Education (Ministry) has agreed to provide travel and co-ordination funding to support the delivery of the itinerant programme.
Ferndale Specialist School: What we offer
The SEIT (Specialist Education Itinerant Teacher) works with the child, the staff, the school and the family.
The SEIT can have overall responsibility for the IEP process.
Support for classroom teachers, teachers aides and school to design and implement programmes for identified ORRS funded students.
Staff training and on-going support.
The specialist education itinerant teacher is able to provide itinerant teaching support and undertakes all employer responsibilities.
Resources, travel and co-ordination of SEIT through a grant from the Ministry.
Enrolling School:
Enrols the ORRS funded student
Transfers the 1 or 2 teaching component of ORRS to Ferndale School.
Is responsible for education and pastoral care of enrolled students.
Provides a suitable working environment for the itinerant teacher.
Is responsible for the family, whanau contact with the student’s family.
SEIT does not impact on teacher aide hours, SEG funding or allocation of specialist support through GSE.
Our specialist teachers understand the complex needs of students with intellectual disabilities.
Our Specialist teachers are up to date with current practice and pedagogy, methodologies and developments in technology.
Our Specialist teachers have expertise in functional learning curriculum programmes, the IEP process, skills for life programmes, social competency, transitions and behaviour management.

A specialist Education Itinerant Teacher, who is employed by Ferndale School, provides a service to the school of enrolment for the specified needs of the identified ORRS student(s). This teacher works Ministry of Education Special Education to support the enrolling school team.
